The first thing I want to get out there is that Capitalism NEVER made us properous. We have accomplished what we have IN SPITE OF Capitalism, not because of it. Ancient history is filled with politico-economic systems that used self-interested, relatively free markets as their mechanism; we have also seen civilizations with communal typologies, and of course dictatorial-imperialistic situations...economics have never taught us (collectively) how to be prosperous, it only shows us that corruption happens when one party controls more of those "means of production" than another. What the proponents of Capitalism do is steal the credit from the things that REALLY propelled us to prosperity.

The two, main, REAL reasons for our prosperity in recent times are the evolution of applied scientific thinking and the harnessing of non-labor energy. Now I could go on forever about how applied science freed us from day to day existence with agriculture, or how human life expectancy doubled overnight with germ theory, how physics have given us tools to make daily life a breeze, or how computational science has "given wings" to ideas, but I want to concentrate on the latter idea for now.

Although applied sciences have given us the intellectual ability to create prosperity, it cannot get us very far without "work" to make our dreams a reality. For all of time prior to the last 100 or so years, human and animal labor were "work" and nearly everything we did relied on these to give ideas form. In the last 100 years we have used that black magic we call oil. Now I can criticize oil for its messiness and various environmental damage, but in all honesty it has been the catalyst of our great material progress in recent times. Now before I lose all the environmentalists reading this, I want to point out that I'm not advocating petrochemical energy; quite the opposite I want us to focus intensely on sustainable energy. HOWEVER, the point of all this is to make you understand what a monumental challenge this is.

1 gallon of gasoline is estimated to do about 600 man hours of work. Imagine having to push your car around, think about the problem of hills and the velocity you would travel at. Think about the way we plow fields and construct buildings. Now, I know what you're thinking: "if we run out of oil we still have electric motors and other technologies, right?" The idea you need to think about here is the net energy gained from an energy source, that is, how much extra energy do you produce as opposed to consume when you build/run an energy source. It is here that oil leaves anything we currently have in the dust. Oil needs only to be pumped out of the ground and run through a couple distillation processes, can be stored easily, and produces huge amounts of energy. What we require now is nothing less than a completely new set of technologies for energy production and utilization, a massive, organized, efficient infrastructure...and we haven't even started.

Yes, we've all heard about the energy crisis, blah blah blah. Well think about the other things oil produces, the plastics, nylon and polyester in clothing, irragation piping, fertilizers, food preservatives, pens, computer parts, printers/toner, scotch tape, telephones, mattresses, earbuds, shotgun shells, oil paints, light sticks, skates/skateboards, musical instruments, toys, cosmetics, baby bottles/diapers, medication/inhalers/bandaids/rubbing alcohol/glycerin/first aid spray, insect repellant, chapstick, syringes, vaseline, antiseptics, eyeglasses, antihistamines, cortisone, trash bags, tupperware, refrigerators, detergents, sponges, shampoo, perfumes, toothbrushes, carpets, furniture, blinds, linoleum, upholstery, polyurethane stains, vinyl, Plexiglas, enamels, epoxies, glues, roofing materials, antifreeze, asphalt, most car parts/fluids/fuel, bubble gum, bungee cords, crayons, watches, composites, to list just a tiny few.

Here in TZM we preach a lot about creating abundance, while I agree it is a worthy goal, it is by NO MEANS an easy thing. Many of us throw the term around as if we could flip a switch and it could be so. We aren't going to create the world we want with communal gardens and earthship homes alone. When you tell everyone to alienate themselves from government, from the corporate structure, from the institutions that push all the largest changes on this planet, you better do so mindfully and with some plan in place. If our choices ignore the size and scope of this challenge, not only will we not free humanity from drudgery, we'll have more laborious work than we've seen in many generations.

So, hey guys, it's been about a year since I've been here, just created a new account. Mostly had to know that there are people out there trying to create a new form of existence that only subscribes to the truth. I've spent a lot of time late looking for the truth, waisting a lot of that time researching different political alternatives. The sad truth is that so many of them deal in all theory and no practice. This argument is pointed in the direction of The Venus Project, but that has more to do with the current system not yet being out of the way. These goals are until then, impossible. It would be much easier if a group could work on learning the truth exclusively and an individual could contribute to that group without having to start from square one. Hopefully, this is the group I'm addressing. Is there yet, something any of us can do to work toward the goals of a resource based economy. I'm joining you with the hope of learning something. Hopefully, that can be done without getting in to endless troll fights over minutia. I'm willing to bend my understanding of these things if no one here is of the opinion out of ego, that what they believe is absolute fact and infallible. So, what is the next step? How do we make this happen?

It appears we have many obstacles to discuss and consider as we attempt to transition ourselves into a more sustainable future. So many that trying to discuss and consider them all (even with an extreme amount of cooperation) would probably take more time than most of us have left to live. So it seems to me, we need to narrow it down to a more manageable number.

Of course were I to start suggesting what was or was not important, what I would end up with is a list of things that were important to me. So my list would not be an accurate description of what was important to us all. Now I could try to be reasonable or logical or any of the other words we use to describe ways of looking at things that attempt to reach out beyond ourselves and be more inclusive, but then I would just be fooling myself and misleading everyone else. As far as I can tell there just isn't any way I can include things I have no awareness of, so the list would still be a description of me

Even if I were somehow able to come up with a list, my efforts to communicate this list to anyone else would be subject to interpretation based on how they defined the words contained within such a list. In a sense we all come to this conversation speaking a language of our very own. There are similarities to be sure, but that just seems to complicate matters even more.

What I am trying to say is whether the earth was created for us, or we ourselves are a product of it, we are part of a natural system. It seems to me that the vast majority of the obstacles we face today are a result of our attempts to control this system rather than being a part of it.

I've spoken many times about how people don't respond to our ideas with rationality and counter data, but instead just "react" and become defensive due to a perceived attack on their identity. If you are not familiar, see these posts:

http://tzmlaca.org/beta/discussion/topics/546302/messages

http://tzmlaca.org/beta/discussion/topics/546644/messages

Well these identities are strongly proposed to us by the society(ies) we live in. I feel that when I talk to many people about TZM and the problems with our various systems, I am not REALLY talking to an individual, but in some way I'm debating against this abstract representation of society; this "personality of society."

If an individual has a personality trait that is so distorted or overpowering that it prevents them from functioning healthily, we call it a personality disorder. Similarly, what if the prevailing ways of thinking and approaching situations given to us by society could fall victim to a similar distortions and overpowering values; can society have a personality disorder? In much the same way Peter talks about these value disorders as "virus-like" and us as an "immune system," I'd like to carry that tradition on and talk about society and its "personality disorders."

For people, the American Psychiatric Association has created a "bible" for disorders and this is known as the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). As wiki states, "currently the DSM-IV lists ten personality disorders, grouped into three clusters." Let's see what those are and explore whether "society" is a healthy person.

Cluster A (odd or eccentric disorders and fears Social relation)

1) Paranoid personality disorder: characterized by irrational suspicions and mistrust of others.

MY NOTES: TERRORISTS! WAR ON TERROR! WAR ON DRUGS! MUSLIMS! Minorities stealing our jobs! I see no problem here.

2) Schizoid personality disorder: lack of interest in social relationships, seeing no point in sharing time with others, anhedonia, introspection.

MY NOTES: Self-interest the basis of motivation? "Don't worry about society, worry about yourself." AhMERRiKA! "Our 'interests' in the middle east."

3) Schizotypal personality disorder: characterized by odd behavior or thinking.

MY NOTES: Every society past or present.

Cluster B (dramatic, emotional or erratic disorders)

4) Antisocial personality disorder: a pervasive disregard for the rights of others, lack of empathy, and (generally) a pattern of regular criminal activity.

MY NOTES: CISPA, ACTA, Patriot Act, NSEERS, Real ID Act, Military Commissions Act, No Fly and Selectee Lists, Material Witness Statute, etc.

5) Borderline personality disorder: extreme "black and white" thinking, instability in relationships, self-image, identity and behavior often leading to self-harm and impulsivity.

MY NOTES: DEM vs REP, Life or Choice, Man & Woman Only, 50% Productive & 50% Unproductive Citizens.

6) Histrionic personality disorder: pervasive attention-seeking behavior including inappropriately seductive behavior and shallow or exaggerated emotions.

MY NOTES: Britney Spears! Angelina Jolie! Brad Pitt! Super Models! Thigh Gaps! "Does this make me look fat?" Huge Boobs! Huge Cocks! Blonds have more fun!

7) Narcissistic personality disorder: a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and a lack of empathy. Characterized by self-importance, preoccupations with fantasies, belief that they are special, including a sense of entitlement and a need for excessive admiration, and extreme levels of jealousy and arrogance.

MY NOTES: All media? Hollywood? Entitlement? EPIC! HEAD SHOT! Every penny I make, it's cause I am intelligent and work hard...but if you make less it's because you're stupid and lazy and if you make more it's because you're corrupt of course. "I'm sexy and I know it."

Cluster C (anxious or fearful disorders)

8) Avoidant personality disorder: pervasive feelings of social inhibition and social inadequacy, extreme sensitivity to negative evaluation and avoidance of social interaction.

MY NOTES: "Capitalism is only failing because the market isn't free!" "An attack on Ammerrka is an attack on freedom!"

9) Dependent personality disorder: pervasive psychological dependence on other people.

MY NOTES: "It's governments job to take care of the problems." "The free market is positioned to solve our problems." "We can't change society, 'it is as it is.'"

10) Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (not the same as obsessive-compulsive disorder): characterized by rigid conformity to rules, moral codes and excessive orderliness.

MY NOTES: "Get Title 26 of the US Code of Federal Regulations (that's the part written by the IRS), all twenty volumes of it, at the bargain price of $974." Problem with society, make more laws! Vote on laws!

CONCLUSION: If I were a psychiatrist, I would commit society to an asylum, and in the spirit of America, prescribe it many many drugs.

I keep hearing we need a "revolution of values" echoed in TZM, and even now "Breaking The Set" has picked up that phrase. While I love Peter and I think he knows what he's talking about, I think that this phrase is misleading. All throughout history we've had revolutions in values, and many were really terrible times. Again, we're about bringing science to social concern and the one thing that allows all of this to work is "understanding."

How is it that Creationists exist and how can they truly believe that science and mythology somehow go hand in hand? The answer is: THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND the science. How is it that Natural Selection was perverted into Social Darwinism? The answer is: THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND the science. If a study comes out (by a well respected scientific publication) and tells you that it has been scientifically proven that plants are responsible for global pollution and the study concludes that plants need to go. You better damn well be able to analyze that data and make a responsible choice if legislation ever comes up that proposes such action. My point is, even if we arbitrarily embrace science as a value, we are still doomed without understanding what it is about science that makes it so important.

Understand this; values CAN'T be arbitrarily changed. Values come from your beliefs, and beliefs come from your understanding of the world. As Percy Bysshe Shelley once said:

"There is a passage in the Christian Scriptures:
'Those who obey not God, and believe not the Gospel of his Son, shall be punished with everlasting destruction.'
This is the pivot upon which all religions turn: they all assume that it is in our power to believe or not to believe; whereas the mind can only believe that which it thinks is true. A human being can only be supposed accountable for those actions which are influenced by his will. But belief is utterly distinct from and unconnected with volition..."

As we continue to look for ways to reach those people lost in the darkness, we need to realize that we can't change their values without first raising their understanding.

With this document i want to share my thoughts and ideas on what we could do to spread the word of RBE and awareness in general.

I want to start a webcast channel (justin.tv, twitch etc) with relevant news and documentary's.
Take important pieces from different online and mainstream news outlets and stream them in the fashion of a 24h news network.
Have repeating news block mixed with documentary's and interviews. We could invite guests to discuss and debate interesting topics with us using Skype or G+. The channel would be a good place for us to stream the Z-day events in full.
Streaming the channel playlist as audio only which can be easy accessible from mobile phones is a future feature.

The mission of the channel would be to spread the word. It would be the perfect companion to your breakfast, study sessions or even your daily run. This would be a easy link to share with people who are interested but do not have the will or the know-how to search out information for them self. The channel should be international so English would be the preferred language, but interesting pieces from non English speaking sources could translated and posted.

To do this a team would have to review news sources, Categorize, tag and publish videos to a playlist.
A weakly schedule of important interviews and documentary's could be worked out in advance but news clips needs daily attention.
With the channel there should be a website where we post all the news clips and there should be a search engine.
With the use of tags and the search engine we could have a good database for future research.
The website could also tag, categorize and post written news pieces.

This channel could also be an important tool in one of my other sugestions.
The TZM online School. (More on that in the future)

This is a simple thing to get going but the hard part is keeping it updated daily.
What do you think? Would anyone want to join in on such a project? Please give me your thoughts.

//Erik

First of all, let me say, that I agree with the line of thinking that advocates a resource based economy and the scientific method applied to society. I have been advocating it in my own way, and have communicated with other members online but not involved in any chapter. This is my first time posting on these forums, be gentle, but I feel so strongly that this message should be shared here. I know probably many in TZM have heard this before, but please consider it with respect to me even if you strongly disagree. The mission of the zeitgeist movement of spreading awareness about a resource based economy I feel, and it has been said by other members, is totally connected with an awakening of consciousness happening on our planet. The line of reasoning and critical thinking that leads to advocating a resource based economy is a part of and not separate from the evolution of nature, the patterns of nature, and our species consciousness in relation to nature. By nature I mean the universe and its message to us through science. As far as beyond this universe and spiritual realms, I will not deal with that, and just focus on using the common realizations we in the zeitgeist movement reached. Yes I admit, I have been on a spiritual path for over a decade, and practice many techniques of reaching a state of consciousness of non-duality, that is not separate from the universe. And I further admit that I am into mystical paths, teachers, gurus, and get some deep stuff from the mystical elements of religion. However, it is because of that, that I see the wisdom of a resource based economy, the critical line of thinking makes sense but the idea of this new system resonates with a part of my consciousness, that I label my spirit or divine nature. So you may be wondering what is your point, what does this have to do with being a part of TZM. The message I feel I carry to TZM is that it is not just sharing this information and it is not just our everyday actions. A powerful way to change consciousness is being that change. We don't want another system that just gets corrupted by humanity's sense of separation from the universe in the process of it's creation. And that is why we must work on our own consciousness in some way, like the founder Peter Joseph has said he using playing music as his meditation. Whether it's meditation or yoga or some other practice, we in the movement must find ways to come into more a state of consciousness that is one with it all, that is not separate from nature. And this is strange, because this consciousness is beyond the critical mind, and reason and logic, it is a deep sense of inner being, just existing. Not logically looking at the universe and saying, "yeah this is all me" but really seeing your Self in everything. The same wisdom and message of nature that gave rise to the critical thinking and resource based economy conclusions is also giving rise to a awakening of this oneness. I have noticed that sometimes in my life when I was really being one, other people around me have opened up into that same state of consciousness. That is how is spreads, by just being that flow of nature, we allow other parts of nature to open up to that flow. And we in TZM must recognize the allies we have in spiritual movements, communities, teachers, paths and even dare I say in religions. Despite their deep flaws, they have opened at least some people to that state of consciousness that feels less separate from it all. While these people may disagree about advocating a resource based economy, they are still being a part of bringing this change about. This is consciousness and practices of consciousness change can be promoted by the movement more, in a simple universal way that relates with the movement's education. Because if TZM just changes people's thinking, but they are still really in ego or sense of separation, what are we really promoting? Are we truly being the change we want to see or advocate? But it can't just be empty words about all this, really the biggest message we can communicate about our consciousness is in our state of consciousness itself. So my main point is for TZM members to open up communication, education and their actual being alive on this planet in a way that helps encourage each other, and everything we interact with, practices of developing this wholeness consciousness, not just in intellect and reasoning, but in how we experience our Self. This point will be key in TZM's impact on bringing this resource based economy about.

Miranda Castel here from the Quad Cities Chapter. Tonight I'd like to bring up the topic awareness. I feel that we need to work harder to bring mass awareness to humanity. Each chapter needs to take weekly measures in order to really bring up progress. I know it is difficult with the Monetary System to gain time to do this but I know that each of us does have enough time one day out of the week to spread some light onto people, if not more than one day. The more people who join our chapters, the easier it will be to spread awareness to people.
So instead of me telling everyone what they should be doing, what do YOU think we should be doing?

My opinion: I believe each chapter should have it's on radio show. But even beyond that, I think that we should do interviews on our local radio stations! If they are asking for money, I'm sure there is a way we can enlighten them a little bit and negociate, if that is not an option consider fund raising or donating yourself.
Something else along the same lines is going to our local news TV stations, whenever we have an event we can invite the press to cover it, or we can go to the press asking them to write an article or feature in the news. The more we bring up this topic to people in the media, the more awareness we can spread to humanity.
By getting TZM known via radio, news and social networking are great ways to send awareness.
But the best way is to actually be face to face. So since spring is here and summer is right aroung the corner, the weather will be nicer and we can hold public outdoor events with information on the movement, we can screen The Zeitgeist Movement for free outside, and most importantly I think protesting will help.
But we need to protest together, at the same time. For instance, all of the chapters join a Hangout and we discuss the best time to protest, so each of us will be protesting in our city at the same time. Like mass meditations, we will have mass protests. And then if that is a success we can have a GLOBAL PROTEST!
We cannot continue at the pace we are going, we need to take it up a notch. Yes we have only been making progress, but we need to make more progress in a short amount of time...

The time is now world, the time is now.

http://chapters.thezeitgeistmovement.com/ia/

https://www.facebook.com/quadcity.zeitgeist

[source : http://lecercle.lesechos.fr/economie-societe/social/temps-travail/221167424/travailler-moins-gagner-plus ]

Voici quelques pistes d'explication :

From this evidence came a mass media message that banned cigarette advertising from newspapers, magazine and television. Let me point out that the US did not make tobacco possession or smoking illegal for adults, but made it mandatory that a warning be placed on the product. A 50% reduction in hazardous human behavior in only 41 years!!! It was done with a mass media message of education and awareness.

So………….it would logically follow that mass media awareness of hazardous human behavior can and did lead to significant social change.

So why are we not doing this with human over- population? I would hazard a guess that vast majority of people in the world today feels, at least at times, that there are too many people to provide a quality life for everyone? I think most humans wished that we all could have a good life but it does not seem possible, right? By quality life I mean healthy amounts of food, safety, comfortable shelter and equal access to information and travel.

So………..it would logically follow that if we can change a widespread social norm by 50% in just 41 years…………then when the warnings about over-population first came out in the 1970s why did we not use our mass media capabilities to change the ‘baby boom’ norm?

It seems like we started to, as evidenced by the baby bust, but what happened to that movement?

In the 60 and 70s men had no problem with vasectomies. For the first time in human history women needed to work 40 hours a week outside the home, but they were able to do this with birth control from family planning clinics that were easily accessible.

What happened to this movement? This modern norm of family size?

It seems like by the 1980s we started to see more Viagra and porn advertising than promoting family planning. Indeed somehow family planning was corrupted with religious propaganda that made the practice seem somehow wicked and abnormal. Something to do with abortion, but if we don’t want abortion why would we be promoting Viagra and pornography with the media instead of family planning? It doesn’t make any sense to me.

The problems in the US alone caused by unplanned pregnancy is ubiquitous soul-suffocating, let alone third world countries.

What is wrong with this picture??????????????????????????????????????????????

As I discuss topics with other members of the movement, I keep getting comments like "you've read X book, right? so why don't you believe X?" Yes, I've tried to read a lot of the recommended books put forth by various members of TZM, but reading them doesn't mean I take everything that is said and adopt it as my own viewpoint. Reading and learning about the world around you is critical, but you HAVE to filter that through your OWN brain and digest that material. If you simply swallow everything you read, you are defeating the point of trying to expand your mind.

Whether the media you come in contact with is from FOX News or Peter Joseph, please digest that material and ask yourself, does it make sense? Is it reasonable to believe the claim? Do facts from other things I know confirm or conflict with what I've just heard? The reading list isn't a checklist of things you should memorize, they are perspectives that may help your understanding.
